Project Orange Thumb- April 4, 2008
Try to close your eyes and imagine completely peaceful place, filled with beautiful plants and singing birds. Try to imagine a garden that you could visit whenever you want to achieve peace of mind and oneness with nature. How wonderful it would be if there was more of such places in the world. If you agree with me then you will probably want to hear about Project Orange Thumb. This project basically encourages communities to develop gardens and even offers grants for exceptional gardens. One of the gardens which received an award is the “Touch the Earth” which is taken care by The Cherokee Outdoor Family YMCA. This garden will be a wonderful education tool, which is designed to educate the future leaders on the importance of gardening and allow them to see the fruits of their labor. Children will be able to learn scientific facts about gardens , as well as personal health benefits from them.
This garden is also a great example of unity and cooperation, which can emerge from undertaking such a task as many people, including The University of Georgia Master Gardeners Program students, local Boy and Girl Scout troops, local churches and school will be contributing to this garden.
